Art Workshops

At Galería Sara Caso, Sundays are days of art workshops where you can learn in a pleasant and friendly environment. The theme of our workshops include Painting, Engraving and Ceramics. Within each discipline we will teach specific workshops in different techniques. For example, our Painting workshops will include experimental drawing with a ballpoint pen, watercolor painting or drawing with coffee. The printmaking workshops will show different techniques such as linoleum engraving or woodcut. Our goal is to learn and have fun.

Our workshops will be between 5 and a maximum of 10 participants. There are no previous technical requirements and our teachers will adapt to the level of knowledge of each participant. All our teachers are artists who exhibit in our gallery and experts in their discipline.

The workshops will be held at the Gallery (Calle Alcántara 51, Salamanca neighborhood of Madrid, close to Lista subway station). All materials needed for the workshops will be provided by Galería Sara Caso and are included in the price.

Linoleum Workshop

The technique of grading is that which consists in the stamping of a previously treated material (matrix) on a paper or medium. There are several types of engraving, flat, hollow, relief etc... In which the matrix varies, as in the case of lithography (stone), woodcut (wood) intaglio (metal / copper) silkscreen (textile). These types of techniques allow you to make several copies of the same drawing with a manufacturing process that can be carried out in three steps: treatment of the plate with the appropriate materials, inking and printing. In this workshop we will learn how to print on linoleum by hand, this material is generally composed of oxidized linseed oil, jute cork and pigments on burlap, which makes it an ideal material for carving in a very easy and excellent way to enter the world of engraving. The materials for carving on linoleum are called gouges, there are several types of tips to get different shapes in your linocut, and its use is to remove with them layers of linoleum that will be those that are blank in the inking (as a negative photo), with these bases we will make our first class which will consist of learning the materials, make the drawing of our piece and carve our linoleum plate. In our second class we will start inking our plate, once carved. The first step is to choose the ink, the ink for engraving is usually a very thick and high coverage ink that catches on almost any material, in this case we will use a water based ink that makes it much easier to use and clean. Making use of a roller we will expand the ink on our linography and we will put the paper for its stamping helping us to press with a Baren, the Baren is a stamping utensil to be able to make pressure manually on paper on the plate, this object is the one that converts our engraving in handmade since in the engraving of mechanical way a Tórculo or Hydraulic press is used. With all these steps we will have our stamping done and we will be ready to do it at home whenever we want.

Drawing Workshop with Coffee

Coffee and is a source of natural pigment available in every house, with it we can make sketches, drawings and paintings in an original way and with a good background smell. The coffee technique is very useful for the understanding of shadows and lights in the object or person to portray, being a good liquid base to work with. In this workshop we will learn to control this technique with which to work in a different way. The class will be divided into two parts, in the first we will learn to control the coffee, the proportions, the water and the elements to use, such as paper, brushes, pens... and in the second part we will begin to mix it with different techniques to get textures and colors with which our work will be unique.

The objective of this workshop is to learn how to make drawings with the pen technique, from the papers to use to the different types of pen, ink or gel, through the compression of the form to generate volume, control of light and shadows to the most complex details. This three-hour workshop is suitable for all levels as it will be possible to apply the teachings to the individual experience of each student. We will start by giving a drawing template to learn how to make the different movements that the pen allows you to obtain shadows and edges and then we will start from an optional photo for later copying with the techniques learned.
